On February 12th, Madeira Startup Retreat had the pleasure of hosting Miguel Alves Ribeiro, the Founder & CEO of SheerME, as our esteemed guest speaker, sharing valuable insights for business growth.
His workshop, titled “All about people and how to build a dream team!”, delved into the intricacies of team building and talent management.
With a background in Marketing and Communications, as well as a master’s degree in project management, Miguel boasts over a decade of experience in leading Marketing and Sales teams within the Telecom industry.
He is also recognized for his role in cofounding BestTables (now known as The Fork) and his association with Zomato as the Head of Growth for EMEA & Latin America.
Miguel’s workshop focused on the fundamental question: “How to hire, motivate, and retain a dream team?” He emphasized the importance of aligning the startup’s culture with the drive and passion of its team members.
According to Miguel, hiring the right people, who not only possess the necessary hard and soft skills but also resonate with the company culture, is essential for accelerating growth and fostering a strong brand culture.
Key attributes to look for in potential team members, as highlighted by Miguel, include hard skills to meet business needs, soft skills aligned with the company’s culture, adaptability to change, passion, self-motivation, and alignment with the product/company vision.
Moreover, Miguel stressed the significance of having a cofounder to complement skill sets and drive business growth collaboratively. He advocated for promoting a high-performance team culture, emphasizing trust, flexibility, and continuous challenge.
In Miguel’s view, retaining talent involves creating a culture where performance is rewarded, milestones are set for ESOPs attribution, and monetary rewards are viewed as a consequence of hard work, rather than the primary motivator.
The workshop concluded with an engaging Q&A session, followed by personalized one-on-one mentoring sessions, providing invaluable guidance to our startup founders.
